My favorite part of Divergent, the book, was how it used the concept of the factions to really explore the meaning of those traits. What is kindness? What is intelligence? Bravery, honesty, selflessness… they can all be interpreted in so many different ways.
The Divergent Movie absolutely did not shy away from these questions. Between the exhilarating direction, the surprisingly original fight choreography, and amazing subtle performances from Shailene Woodley and company, I really FELT all the aspects of society Veronica Roth’s dystopia is supposed to reflect. I felt Tris’s distain towards Eric’s cruel and foolish notions of bravery. I felt her elation as she ran and jumped and zip-lined. And when Four said that he wanted to be brave, AND selfless, AND kind, and all things… I wanted to be all those things too. (Plus, he was SUPER HOT).
As far as entertainment value goes, the movie made me laugh a lot, it made me nervous, and seriously had some of the best butt-kicking I’ve seen recently. Also… the guy who played Eric looked EXACTLY like Macklemore!
